Large companies such as Microsoft and Google are known for asking ‘out of the box’ interview questions and more and more digital, creative and media companies are joining in on this trend, but why? Finding quality candidates that perfectly fit your job role can take a lot of time and effort, so ensuring that you have the perfect candidates is particularly important.
The interview process is obviously the ideal time to test how candidates work in real time, how they will fit into your team and company environment, and also how they cope under pressure - particularly when they are faced with the unexpected.
Creative questions can help you better understand a person by forcing them to think differently. And it’s very likely that the question itself will be one they’re not prepared for so they’ll be forced to answer it honestly.
So, with that in mind, we thought we would start the week off in a lighthearted manner with our favourite pick of collated, out-of-the-box interview questions...
If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?
If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?
If you were a pie, what flavor would you be?
If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be and why?
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play the lead role as you?
If you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you want?
Are you a hunter or a gatherer?
What’s your favorite season?
Lighten the mood and have some fun! The interview process doesn’t have to be boring, mundane and stressful. Engage on a more personal level with the help of these questions and find out who your interviewees really are.
The need for some of the common interview questions is still there, but it’s also a great idea to ask candidates questions that they wouldn’t expect, to see how they act on their feet.
Hopefully these unusual questions have sparked some creativity of your own so that the next time you sit down for an interview you’ll be ready to get some quality insights and have a little fun while you’re doing it.
